Tioman Island
|
Tioman Island is a champion of Malaysia's east peninsular coast. It attracts an eclectic mix of Singaporeans, backpackers and SCUBA enthusiasts, all of whom find their own niche on the island. Lacking the weighty resorts of the Perhentian Islands, Tioman Island is a great place to book a bungalow and settle into a beach chair with a book for a day or two. While most of the accommodation in Tioman Island consists of bungalows and budget hotels, there are some higher-end resorts at Terak Beach. It's close to the airport and delivers full amenities and service. These resorts provide an ideal waypoint for travelers in need of a few days' pampering, and it offers a few hard-to-find extras including a full cocktail bar and excellent room service. Terak Beach is most accessible, but there's just as much to see and do at ABC and Salong beaches. Both have dive shops that offer certification courses and comprehensive scuba tours. Less intensive snorkeling trips transfer tourists to remote beaches with shallow coral reefs. Both are satisfying ways to get out and enjoy the clear waters. Away from Tioman Island's resorts, the local landscape changes. Inland treks reveal jungles and mountains with a commanding view over rustic chalets and coastal villages. These remote hotels in Tioman Island are perfect for backpackers or no-frills travelers who see the value in working out their own dinner arrangements and mixing with locals. It's possible to fly directly to Tioman Island from Kuala Lumpur or Singapore for guests of the resort. Otherwise, the best way to get here is by ferry from Mersing, a well-connected city on the mainland. |
